Tuna Extinction in Progress

Tweet This!

It's high season for the Southern bluefin tuna (or the suck-to-be-you season, if you were a tuna), and Taiwan's long-line fleet is hard at work. For a long time, almost all the fresh maguro went to Japan. During the Japanese recession, the demand for the expensive fish fell, and local government decided to promote to the internal market. The effort was quite successful, and the power of the typical Asian fad is destroying the fishing stock. Not to mention all the mercury built up in the deep-sea fish. Sure's tasty in the meantime, though.
