Wide Angle Test

Tweet This!

Got up early on a lazy Sunday morning and decided to get up onto the roof to take some pictures. With a good sky and a good view from the high vantage point, it was a good time to break out the wide-angle lens. The tallest building in the world (for now, anyway) in the early light seemed like a good target to test the different settings of the Sigma 10-20mm super-wide lens. I bought the lens to take pictures of the narrow alleys in Italy, but I found that the super-wide angle is not as easy to compose as a normal lens. Faces and features get distorted if you place them away from the center of the FOV. Verticals get slanted when you tilt the lens off-center, and apparent distances are extended, so horizon shots become surprisingly dull unless other objects in the midplane and foreground add interest. Wasn't ready to do that effectively in Italy, but I think I did better on our Japan trip, although the Most Interesting picture in the Japan set was actually taken by the little lady.
