新竹 Trip
Went out to 戴老家 in 沙坑村 with the GF last Saturday. 戴阿姨 has six sisters and most of them and their families visit the old household every weekend. Actually she was suppose to go to Hong Kong last week, but a cold plus the typhoon kept her here still. GF was afraid that I'd find the countryside boring, but it wasn't that bad, really. The usually heavy weekend traffic was minimized due to people worrying about the aftermath of the typhoon, which did a lot of damage in the county, but thankfully it didn't affect the lowlands much, unlike the mountain villages. Went out to 內灣村 in the afternoon. The popular weekend spot was also mercifully uncrowded thanks to the daytrippers staying away. Drove to 新竹市 in the evening to the old Buddhist temple 城隍廟 that has been surrounded and submerged under a maze of street-food stands. Been fed so well in Taiwan that I haven't really had a chance to go out and partake in the 小吃, which is probably the best-done cuisine on the island. Nothing like a big bowl of shaved ice to finish the day.
